There is no denying the fact that Panna has been ruling the Behala Trap Depot region with Panna’s Oil Mill, Panna’s Fresh N Bakes, or Panna Sweets. Decades ago, when there was hardly any fancy restaurant at Behala, Panna’s Kitchen has dominated the area. But, sadly to say, gone were the days when Panna’s Kitchen reflects good food and fine dining. With the introduction of Swiggy and Foodpanda in the last couple of years, I could hardly remember any days that I have actually went out for a fine dinner. Further the addition of major restaurant chains including Arsalan and Aminia have raised the level of competition. In the last decade, Behala has witnessed the introduction of various food joints, restaurant and cafes particularly at the James Long Sarani. After visiting the Winter Flower Show at The Agri- Horticulture Society, we headed to Panna’s Kitchen for dinner.
It was more than 5 years that I was visiting the restaurant. Being at the restaurant made me feel kind of nostalgic it made me realize how much life has changed over the years. But, unfortunately for Panna’s kitchen, everything is the same: same menu, same interiors, same shady stairs, same setting and even the dinnerware. The thing I most loved about the restaurant was its instrumental oldies that lifted the environment. Now the songs are being replaced by daily serials on a flat screen.
Food: The service was good, food was presented within 15 minutes. But, the quantity of the food has deteriorated over the years.
Butter naan is a type of flat bread prepared in special oven called tandoor. There are varieties of naan in Indian Cuisine, but butter naan is plain flat bread baked inside the walls of tandoor and presented with a dollop of butter over it. The butter naan was hot and soft and well smothered in butter. I have been at Panna for years and the size as well as the thickness has been reduced.
Chicken Reshmi Butter Masala
Reshmi Chicken Kebab are cooked in silky sooth gravy. Unlike chicken butter masala, reshmi chicken butter masala are not spicy. In Panna’s they are on the sweeter side though. Chicken Reshmi Butter Masala was good but the presentation was not appealing. Chicken reshmi Butter Malasa came with six pieces of soft and juicy chicken. But the taste was divine. The gravy was really smooth and the chicken was tender and moist from inside. The chicken melted in my mouth. Reshmi Butter Chicken Masala goes really well with butter naan.
Murgh Handi Chicken
Murgh Handi Chicken is slow cooked in earthen pot to give the perfect flavor and smell. The Handi Chicken was on the spicy side. The sweet and spicy flavors of all the masalas were wonderful. Handi Masala was served with two tender, juicy and big pieces of chicken.
- Presentation: ★☆☆☆☆
- Food Quality: ★★★★☆
- Taste: ★★★★☆
- Ambiance: ★★☆☆☆
- Value for money: ★★★☆☆
- Service: ★★★★☆
Overall good food quality and taste, but ambiance needs significant improvement. Their chicken reshmi butter masala and egg fried rice are my major weaknesses. I prefer take-away rather than sit and dine.
P.S: Panna’s Kitchen has not yet tied up with any food delivery application like swiggy or foodpanda. But, they do home deliveries personally within the locality. Further, their home delivery services are not available in public holidays or festivals. For further information about home delivery of food it is advised to call the restaurant.
Must Try items (based on my opinion and items tasted):
- Chef’s special fish;
- Reshmi Butter Masala;
- Paneer Pulao;
- Chicken Tawa Masala;
The recent addition of Panna : Panna’s Fresh N Bakes is a real gem.
